China and Dominica re-established diplomatic ties in 2004 and negotiations for the hospital started in 2010 and is part of a four-part projects agreement in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two governments. The new hospital was built by a Chinese construction firm on the same site at the present Princess Margaret Hospital at a cost of approximately EC$40 million (US$15 M). The hospital is equipped with advanced technology and facilities capable of treating major diseases. The Dominica-China hospital will have the capability of treating both elderly people older than 60 years and children under the age of 18 with free medical services.
