Of all the cancers recorded in Jamaica, prostate cancer is ranked number one with respect to frequency and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Jamaica. At one time prostate cancer in Jamaica was reported to be the highest in the world now in the Caribbean but is now overtaken by Martinique, Barbados, Guadeloupe and Puerto Rico that rank in the top twenty countries in the world for the highest incidences of the disease. Speaking at a recent symposium on prostate cancer, the CEO of the Jamaica Cancer Society Yulit Gordon, is calling on the government to draft a policy which would establish a national screening programme to facilitate the early detection of prostate cancer.
