Opportunities for both medical and wellness tourism are wide open for healthcare providers in the Caribbean, but they must do their homework and do the necessary due diligence before making a decision as to which way to go. For example, a private hospital must consider the cost to upgrade their clinical services to international standards and subsequently apply for accreditation from an internationally recognised organisation like Temos International if they want to go after international patients.
Alternatively, while medical tourism is driven by a need for cheaper quality medical services, health and wellness tourism is more prevention driven and directed towards improving a person’s quality of life. Therefore having access and utilizing natural resources like thermal springs and spas are important assets for targeting the rehabilitation and addiction recovery clients.
