The healthcare system in St. Lucia continues to deteriorate resulting from a combination political infighting, mismanagement, and deteriorating facilities including a fire which destroyed the St. Jude Hospital nine years ago. Despite continued protests and outcries from public figures and organizations, the current administration led by Prime Minister Chastanet seems insensitive to the urgency of the deplorable state of health services. Recently during heavy inclement weather, the roof of the maternity ward at the Victoria Hospital caved in and luckily no one was injured which prompted the two major health professional organizations, the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA), the Saint Lucia Nurses Association, and others demanding that the government take immediate action or ‘else’.
