St. Vincent & The Grenadines located in the Eastern Caribbean has long been a major exporter of illegal marijuana into the United States. Now the government is on the verge of getting into the emerging medical marijuana industry with the recent tabling of three bills in an attempt to legalise the drug for medicinal purposes. In recent years other Caribbean countries notably Jamaica, Cayman Islands, St Kitts and Puerto Rico have taken steps to decriminalize the use of small amounts of the drug for personal use. Already, Jamaica and Puerto Rico have established licensed dispensaries where marijuana can be purchased with a prescription for medicinal purposes. It’s just a matter of time when more Caribbean countries will follow suit as they look for other ways to boost their fragile economies via marijuana tourism whether it is for recreational or medicinal purposes.
